Primera Dama en campaña de prevención por la salud de la mujer

15 de enero de 2015 - La Fortaleza – La primera dama, Wilma Pastrana Jiménez, será la portavoz de una nueva campaña dirigida a la mujer, con el propósito de orientar y ayudar a prevenir el cáncer de mama y cuello uterino. Se trata de una serie de cápsulas informativas en radio y televisión para promover la importancia de la salud integral de la población femenina en la isla.

“Es necesario que cada mujer, cada joven se apodere y tome control de su salud. El poder de la educación también forma parte de nuestro rol activo en la sociedad moderna y debemos practicarlo, además, desde la perspectiva de la prevención de enfermedades como el cáncer de mama y cuello uterino”, expresó Pastrana Jiménez durante el inicio de las actividades de orientación que se llevan a cabo en enero, mes de concienciación y prevención del cáncer de cuello uterino.

La campaña titulada “Piensa en ti” también forma parte de las iniciativas que realiza el Programa de Prevención y Detección Temprana de Cáncer de Mama y Cuello Uterino de Puerto Rico. El programa, administrado por el Centro Comprensivo de Cáncer de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, busca atraer a mujeres que califiquen para hacerse las pruebas de mamografía y Papanicolao (Pap), libre de costo.

Para ser elegible y participar de los servicios de cernimiento y diagnóstico, las aspirantes deben ser mujeres que no califiquen para la tarjeta de salud de Puerto Rico o no cuenten con un plan de salud privado. También podrán solicitar las féminas entre los 21 a 64 años, 65 años o más que no tengan Medicare y aquellas que no cuentan con Medicare Parte B.

“El control de nuestra salud y la de nuestras familias está en nuestras manos. Por eso reiteramos la importancia de que cada mujer se eduque y de igual forma instruya a sus hijas, nietas, sobrinas y amigas a tomar acción y preocuparse por su bienestar y calidad de vida”, sostuvo la primera dama.

En la Isla, el cáncer de cuello uterino es el sexto cáncer de mayor prevalencia entre las mujeres, según datos ofrecidos por el Programa de Prevención y Detección Temprana de Cáncer de Mama y Cuello Uterino de Puerto Rico.
