Puerto Rico Governor Announces New Climate Milestone: Island will no Longer Produce Electricity with Damaging CO2.

San Juan – Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló today announced that the island’s power grid will stop using carbon as fuel to generate electricity by 2020, moving away from a polluting fossil fuel and towards a cleaner energy source.
“We are in talks with AES Energy Systems, the firm that owns Puerto Rico’s carbon plant in the municipality of Guayama, in order to identify a cleaner form of energy by next year”, said Governor Ricardo Rosselló.
“Even though our government’s public policy, as established in our Energy Policy Integrated Plan, indicates that the deadline to move away from CO2 is, at the earliest, 2028, we are committed to transitioning from fossil fuels as early as possible”, the Governor added.
“It’s my commitment with the people of Puerto Rico to fully transition to 100% renewable sources by 2050. By 2025, we expect to produce 40% of our electric power from renewable sources”, concluded Rosselló.
