Governor Rosselló will attend State of the Union address
(February 4, 2019 - San Juan) Governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Rosselló accepted the invitation extended by the Democratic senator from New York and leader of the Senate Democratic caucus, Chuck Schumer, to attend the State of the Union address (SOTU) by the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
The chief executive traveled this evening to Washington to attend the address which will take place in the chamber of the House of Representatives tomorrow, Tuesday, February 5.
The SOTU is held every February at the invitation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. During the address, the chief executive of the United States comments on the situation of the country and establishes his main public policy objectives for the current legislative session.
On the other hand, Rosselló will also meet with members of Congress and the Trump Administration to discuss pressing matters pertaining the approval of emergency aid to meet the funding of several assistance programs of the Island.
The emergency aid includes the Nutritional Assistance Program (NAP) of the Island, the looming cliff in Medicare and Medicaid funding, as well as other issues related to the recovery and reconstruction of Puerto Rico following the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
During the meetings, Governor Rosselló will be joined by the executive director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), Carlos Mercader.
The secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of State, Luis G. Rivera, will act as acting governor until the return of Rosselló this Thursday, February 7.
