Governor Rosselló announces visit of the president of the United States to the Island
(September 14, 2017 - Washington, DC) Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, reported that the United States president, Donald J. Trump, will visit Puerto Rico to see firsthand the damage caused by Hurricane Irma on the Island.
The visit was confirmed this morning by Tom Bossert, advisor to the president of the United States in matters of Homeland Security.
The governor met with the White House official to give updates on the recovery work on the Island, as well as the assistance that Puerto Rico is providing to the neighboring islands of Saint Martin and Saint Thomas.
Although an exact date for the president's visit to Puerto Rico was not confirmed, the federal official took the opportunity to thank governor Rosselló and the Government of Puerto Rico for their assistance in the repatriation of American citizens who were in several of the Lesser Antilles and the assistance to citizens of other countries.
The governor thanked the official for all the assistance the federal government has provided through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the US Department of Health.
"I am grateful for the interest the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has shown in visiting our Island to check the damages to the governmental infrastructure and to the Puerto Rican families." "It will also be a great opportunity for him to see firsthand the collaboration between the Government of Puerto Rico and the federal government in the repatriation of American citizens from Saint Thomas and Saint Martin," said Rosselló following the meeting that lasted about two hours.
Also present at the meeting in the White House were the Government of Puerto Rico chief of staff, William Villafañe; the associate chief of staff, Itza García; the executive director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration in Washington, D.C., Carlos Mercader; the secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury, Raúl Maldonado; and the Secretary of Public Affairs and Public Policy, Ramón Rosario.
Governor Rosselló told the federal official that, according to preliminary discussions with FEMA, damages caused by Hurricane Irma in Puerto Rico are estimated at $600 million.
